Ash Mathews
I am a freelance makeup artist based out of San Diego, California. I attended beauty school in 2002 and received my cosmetology license in St. Louis, Missouri (where I am from).
My first passion was always makeup artistry however I chose to specialize in hair color after school because there was more of a market for hair colorists in St. Louis, Missouri. I worked at Dominic Michael Salon as a colorist and makeup artist while forming long lasting relationships with a few photographers along the way.
Fast forward to 2010, my fiance Greg received a job opportunity in the San Diego area and two months later we packed our stuff and made the 1,500 mile move. Given all of the new things happening in my life it was at that point that I chose to focus on makeup artistry %100 and began freelancing.
I already had experience with makeup for weddings, print, television and commercial assignments thanks to my connections and network in the salon industry in St. Louis, so California was the next big step for me to take.
My niche is ultimately clean beauty makeup however I am experienced in more advanced makeup applications as well. I am inspired by makeup artists Way Bandy and Kevyn Aucoin. I too aspire to create beautiful makeup that is customized to each persons features. I spend the most time on evening out the skin and creating the “perfect” face by using shading and highlighting techniques.
I am currently working with a few agencies and testing when I’m able to, I’m a perfectionist so I’m constantly striving to perfect and find more efficient ways of doing something.
